Legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar celebrated his 50th birthday on Monday, April 24, 2023. On the occasion of his birthday, Sharjah Cricket Stadium honored him by naming a stand after him at the iconic Stadium. Tendulkar has a unique connection with the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, having scored seven centuries at the stadium, including two in a tri-series against Australia.
The Master Blaster struck 143 against Australia, which is known as the Desert Storm innings when his batting was interrupted by a 25-minute sandstorm in Sharjah on April 22, 1998. His performance enabled India to qualify for the tri-series final and he hit 134 on his 25th birthday, helping India clinch the title.
The West Stand at Sharjah Cricket Stadium was named the ‘Sachin Tendulkar Stand’ in a ceremony attended by Sharjah Cricket CEO Khalaf Bukhatir. Tendulkar was unable to attend the ceremony in person. However, he rued his absence, claiming that he had prior commitments. He also stated that playing in Sharjah was always an unforgettable one for him.

“I wish I was there but unfortunately I had prior commitments. him. Playing in Sharjah has always been a magnificent experience. From the electrifying atmosphere to the love, affection, and support, Sharjah has been a special venue for Indian cricket fans and lovers of the game from around the globe,” Sachin was quoted as saying by India Today.
He also thanked Sharjah Cricket CEO and the Sharjah cricket team for this kind gesture on his 50th birthday.
“A big thank you to Bukhatir and his team for this kind gesture on the 25th anniversary of the Desert Storm match and my 50th birthday. Feels like the greatest 6 of them all,” he added.
On Monday, the Sydney Cricket Ground also paid tribute to Tendulkar by unveiling gates named after the legendary batter and West Indies great Brian Lara. The Master Blaster retired from professional cricket in 2013 following a spectacular 24-year career that include an exemplary 100 international hundreds.
