‘I think that ship’s sailed’ – Joe Root on being England’s white-ball captain

England legendary batter Joe Root ruled out the chances of captaincy in the white-ball formats for The Three Lions after Jos Buttler’s sudden resignation. The mystery of the new white-ball skipper for England, who will take on the reins of the 50-over and T20 format going into the future of English cricket.

The resignation of Buttler came after a disappointing Champions Trophy campaign for the Englishmen, who failed to win a single game in the ICC event. This has given England’s managing director, Rob Key, and head coach Brendon McCullum a tough decision to make. Joe Root was one of the names that came to mind, especially due to his experience of leading the Test team from 2017 to 2022.

However, the 34-year-old has openly said that he has done his stint as a captain and believes that whoever will be getting the opportunity to lead the side will do a brilliant job.

“I’ve done my time as a captain in an England shirt but I’m sure whoever gets the opportunity to do it will be extremely proud and do a brilliant job. I think that ship’s sailed,” he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

Other than captaincy, the Yorkshire-born also gave his opinion on the team’s performance in the Champions Trophy. The star cricketer openly stated that the tournament was disappointing and said the team did not play anywhere near what they were capable of, bringing up the amount of talent within the team as well. He also reflects back to the time between 2015 and 2019 where the England team had some great seasons.

“The Champions Trophy was disappointing, We didn’t play anywhere near what we’re capable of. There’s so much talent and so much more to come from that team. It’s a really good opportunity to reset and to move forward again as a group and get back to the heights that we know we’re capable of and where we were in and around that 2015 to 2019 phase,” he concluded.
