It is quite well-established that Jasprit Bumrah has been the person to go to, to address any sort of crisis being faced by the Indian side over the years. The pacer has delivered the goods on several occasions. The 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy saw him sparkle throughout the series. Not only that, he led the side to a commanding win in the series opener too.

Former Indian skipper, Sunil Gavaskar, expressed why he feels Bumrah will be the ideal candidate for taking over the baton of full-time captaincy from Rohit.

“He could be the next man. I think he will be the next man. Because he leads from the front. He has got a very good air about him. The air of a leader. But not somebody who is going to put pressure on you. Sometimes, you have captains who put a lot of pressure on you,” shared Gavaskar during a conversation with 7Cricket.

Won’t be surprised if he takes over very soon: Gavaskar

Speaking on the same topic, Gavaskar shed light on Bumrah’s expectations from the others in the side. He also underscored the considerate nature of the pacer in helping out his fellow bowlers while on the field.

“With Bumrah, you can see that he expects the others to do what their job is and why they’re in the national team. But he doesn’t seem to pressurise anybody. And with the fast bowlers, he has been absolutely brilliant. Standing at mid-off, mid-on. Every time he was on hand to tell them and guide them. I think he was absolutely brilliant and I won’t be surprised if he takes over very soon,” added Gavaskar.

Proactive field setups for respective batters of the Australian side as well as astute rotation of bowlers according to the situation were influential in India winning the first Test by a whopping 295-run margin. Bumrah, who served as a stand-in captain with Rohit not being available with the side in Perth, was the talk of the town at that juncture. It will be interesting to note whether the premium speedster is handed the role of leading the side during India’s next red-ball assignment against England.
