India skipper Rohit Sharma’s terrible run in Test Cricket continues to disappoint the fans which has led many people to question his career in red-ball cricket. On the same note, the former India legend Sunil Gavaskar insinuated that the Hitman might make the retirement call after the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy comes to an end.
The Gabba Test ended in a draw which gives a chance to the senior Indian batters to get back in form before the Melbourne Test. The top batters of the Indian team have failed to make an impact in the series so far. One of the batters who has been struggling in the series down under is Rohit Sharma, who has scored three, six, and ten runs respectively in the last three innings.
The current form of the Test captain has led to many experts talking about his eventual retirement from the longes format of the game. Sunil Gavaskar has opined on the batter’s form and said that if he doesn’t score he might as well announce his retirement.

“I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call,” said Gavaskar while speaking to ABC Sport.
Gavaskar further supported his statement by bringing up the last two matches of the series which will be the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and the Sydney Test slated to begin on December 26th and January 3rd respectively.
“He’s a very conscientious cricketer, he will not want to be a burden on the team. He’s a cricketer who cares very deeply for Indian cricket. So if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down.” Gavaskar added.
Apart from the ongoing Test series against Australia, the 37-year-old has not been able to score in the red ball format. In the last 13 innings, he has scored 152 runs and is averaging only 11.83. There are still two matches left in the series and this could be an opportunity for the T20 World Cup 2024 winning skipper to step up for the team and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
