‘I just don’t understand’ - Kevin Pietersen analyses Harry Brook’s performance against Delhi Capitals in ongoing IPL 2023

Other than smashing a terrific century against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Eden Gardens in the ongoing IPL 2023, England sensation Harry Brook hasn’t done much to justify his spot in the playing XI of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Barring that one match against KKR, Brook has scored only 63 runs in the remaining six matches. Consequently, these failures have raised questions about his calibre with the bat on Indian pitches.

Against Delhi Capitals in SRH’s last match, the 24-year-old managed to score only seven runs off 14 deliveries and got out while attempting an audacious scoop shot. The youngster couldn’t make any sort of connection with the ball as South Africa ace pacer, Anrich Nortje, shattered his stumps in the sixth over of the match.

Notably, Kevin Pietersen, who was part of the commentary team was disgusted with Brook’s shot selection and openly criticised him for trying to play a shot like that under pressure. The former cricketer later stated that he might be old fashioned to understand the motive behind the shot but called it risky anyway.

“I just don’t understand the shot actually. The fine leg is back. You’ve got a deep point, you’ve got a fine leg. He was giving himself a lot of room on the leg stump to hit through the off-side. I dunno, maybe I’m old fashioned – fine leg back, not a good shot,” Pietersen said while doing commentary.

DC defeated SRH by seven runs

The Capitals pulled off an incredible victory at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium as they successfully defended 144 runs against the home side. Batting first, Delhi were under pressure right from the beginning but Manish Pandey and Axar Patel’s knock helped the visiting team post a defendable total on board.

When it comes to the second innings, SRH were very slow on their approach and DC took advantage of that. Later, Heinrich Klaasen tried his best to get the job done for his franchise but got out after scoring 31 runs off 19 deliveries. Meanwhile, the home team needed just 12 runs to win in the last over but Mukesh Kumar was brilliant with the ball as DC ended up winning the match by seven runs.
