February 23, an inconsolable Harmanpreet Kaur gets embraced by Anjum Chopra after India’s heartbreaking loss to Meg Lanning’s Australia in the Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final. Cut to March 26, and the Indian skipper could not hide her smile after Mumbai Indians got past Lanning’s Delhi Capitals to lift the first-ever Women’s Premier League title.

The final of the inaugural edition of the WPL was a huge occasion in itself but Harmanpreet Kaur’s losing streak against Meg Lanning added an extra narrative to the showpiece event. However, it was the Indian all-rounder who found herself on the winning side after her bowlers did the damage in the first innings.

Mumbai Indians’ skipper also played a crucial part in the finale as she stitched together an invaluable 72-run stand with Nat Sciver-Brunt to steady the ship for her side. The latter went on to guide the team to a maiden title after losing her skipper to an unfortunate dismissal.

There was relief on the face of Harmanpreet Kaur, who finally got one over Meg Lanning to break her duck against the Aussie. While she revelled in joy after finally lifting the coveted trophy, she admitted that her side got a bit lucky in the initial part of the match as three Delhi batters succumbed to full tosses.

“Great experience, we were waiting for so many years. Everyone enjoyed this throughout the dressing room. It feels like a dream, for everyone here. So many people were asking when WPL will come and that day is here, and we are so happy and proud.

“Very happy with how everyone performed. I think staying positive is key, we were lucky with full tosses going in our favour. This is a special moment for all of us, I have been waiting a long time and today I know what it feels like to be winning (laughs),” Harmanpreet said at the post-match presentation.
