Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant recently opened up on the communication quirks of his captain, Rohit Sharma. The 26-year-old appeared on famed comedian, Tanmay Bhat’s YouTube channel and provided a glimpse into the off-field interactions between players.
When questioned about his understanding of Sharma’s messages, particularly given his distinctive Mumbai-style language, Pant gave an honest answer. “I understand what he is saying on the ground. However, I don’t understand much when it comes to off the field.”
He reflected on a humorous incident from IPL 2024 when he attempted to distract Virat Kohli from behind the sightscreen despite being banned for a match due to slow over-rate offenses.
“It was one of the most important matches of the season for us and we needed to perform well. I couldn’t play that match and was thinking what could I do from the outside,” he added.
There was a lot of freedom and understanding with Ravi Bhai: Rishabh Pant
Pant also spoke warmly about his relationship with former India head coach Ravi Shastri. He praised Shastri’s approach to coaching, particularly his unconventional advice for tackling off-spinners
“It was an amazing relationship. There was a lot of freedom and understanding with Ravi Bhai. Instead of telling me not to do something, he would give me a better option. I believe in that approach. I don’t like when someone says that this cannot be done. I was getting out to off-spinners very often at one point. He told me that I needed to do something about facing off-spinners. He asked me to start playing the reverse sweep against off-spinners,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the Haridwar-born recently featured in the Duleep Trophy and scored 68 runs across two innings, including a sublime half-century. Interestingly, the southpaw has also been included in India’s Test squad for the Bangladesh series and will be part of India’s red-ball squad after nearly 20 months.
