‘I don’t need to go and abuse the batsman’- Jasprit Bumrah on how he shows his aggression

'I don’t need to go and abuse the batsman'- Jasprit Bumrah on how he shows his aggression

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is a fierce battle between two of the biggest rivals in international cricket. The 2024-25 edition has also witnessed some on-field confrontations which have featured some of the best players in the world.

An example of this was seen in the Sydney Test as well where India’s number one pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Konstas got into an argument during the last few minutes of Day 1. The 19-year-old opener instigated the Indian skipper from the non-striker’s end, where the normally cool and calm pacer was riled up due to the incident, losing his cool. Bumrah was also seen celebrating in Konstas’ face after he got the wicket of Khawaja two balls later. In a recent interview, Bumrah opened up about his way of showing aggression as a fast bowler.

“I am aggressive; it’s just that I don’t need to go and abuse the batsman, because when I was a kid, I saw the bowlers on the television screaming and shouting and going head-to-head. When I tried it, I became too aggressive; when I tried to play in club cricket, it didn’t work in my favor,” said Bumrah to Forbes India.

“When I realized that I go overboard, to control that I consciously worked on it. When I’m nice and calm and relaxed, people don’t know what’s going on in my head, so that gives me a mental advantage. That helps me to stay calm and make better decisions,” he added.

Bumrah on sledging

Bumrah was also asked during the interview if he has ever sledged someone during the game to which he gave a firm answer saying that it happens during the game but he still avoids using abusive language and mentions that it is easy for him to start an on-field battle but he does not do it consciously.

“I obviously won’t lie; it happens. But I don’t start it (sledge), But when it comes my way, I don’t back down as well, because that is how I started playing. It is very easy for me to start that battle, but I don’t do it consciously because I want to be in my zone or my moment,” Bumrah added.
