The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 started with the usual tone for which the series is known. In the first Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth, Yashasvi Jaiswal was in roaring form as he scored a century. During the innings, the southpaw had a banter with Australian pacer, Mitchell Starc. While the latter was bowling at him, Jaiswal had sledded Starc that the pacer was bowling too slow.

The conversation quickly made it to the headlines and several pundits applauded the young India opener for having announced himself against Australia. But the tables turned when the 22-year-old took to the crease in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval. He was dismissed LBW by Starc on the very first ball. Ahead of the second Test, the left-arm pacer revealed that he did not listen to what Jaiswal said to him in the first Test.

“I didn’t hear him say I bowled too slow. I won’t say too much to people these days. I may have been back in the day, but now I just sort of get on with it. Played that flick shot and I think I bowled pretty much the same ball and he defended it. I asked where the flick shot was and he laughed at me. We just left it at that,” Starc told cricket.com.au.

Nothing really changes game by game: Starc

Speaking of Starc, the veteran was in marauding form in Adelaide. He made use of the pronounced swing generated by the pink ball and picked six wickets, bowling 14.1 overs and giving away just 48 runs. Thanks to his successful spell, India registered a total of just 180 runs. On Jaiswal’s wicket, he quipped that he did not pre-empt the swing on the very first ball.

“I don’t know. I can’t tell. Feel like the ball has been coming out well, we did not play that badly, they played better than us in Perth. [on if he visualized getting swing first-ball to Jaiswal] Not that much to be honest. Nothing really changes game by game, was a nice start,” said Starc after the Indian innings.
