Former Australia cricketer Mike Hussey was a part of the coaching staff of the England team that won the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. When it comes to the Ashes, Hussey will be supporting his country. The star batter represented Australia more than 300 times including all formats of the game.
With the ODI World Cup scheduled to be held in 2023, Hussey has revealed that he would love to be involved with England again.
England are now in Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series. The dominant England side beat Bangladesh in the first two matches and have won the series. The third ODI will be played at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram on Monday, March 6.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Hussey who is popularly known as ‘Mr. Cricket’ opened up on his experience with England during the T20 World Cup. He was full of praise for England cricket stating that they readily had replacements available when some player was injured during the T20 tournament.
“That’s a pretty special group. The depth of English cricket is phenomenal. That T20 World Cup campaign, you look at the players that weren’t available or were injured during the tournament, and another high quality player would come in. I am not sure too many countries could have done that. Bairstow, Archer, Topley were all out. We kept replacing them. That is testament to the system,” Hussey said.
“As an Australian looking in from the outside, in 2015 it did feel like they were lagging well behind in white-ball cricket. But the people they got involved – Strauss, Morgan, Bayliss – changed the whole philosophy. There’s two things. The culture England have created. And second, the exposure players have got in different leagues around the world. That’s really catapulted England to the top of the tree when it comes to white-ball cricket,” he added.
Australia won Ashes comfortably last time, but this is going to be a completely different kettle of fish: Mike Hussey
Hussey is hoping that Australia will surely win the Ashes in 2023. He said that Australia will take it as a challenge to meet England, who are currently playing an amazing brand of Test cricket.
“The way England are playing has made Australians stand up and notice, and recognise we are in for a real challenge. England will come hard, but Australians like that challenge. Australia won comfortably last time, but this is going to be a completely different kettle of fish. England are playing their own way, which is great for the game, and the home fans will be up and about. That suits Australia, who will put up a fight. What more could you want? It looks like it will be the best series since 2005. Obviously I am hoping the Australians sneak over the line and win the Ashes, but I just want to see a great series.”
