Nathan McSweeney was called up just ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The young batter was entrusted with the crucial opener’s position along with Usman Khawaja. He made his debut in the Perth Test and scored 10 and a duck in the first and second innings respectively. The batter, however, looked in good touch in Adelaide on Day 1 and built a partnership with Marnus Labuschagne.

From the opposite side, Jasprit Bumrah was spitting fire with the ball. He bowled an unplayable delivery to the right-handed batter and the pink ball just whiffed around the outside edge to reach wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Just as the minimal gap saved McSweeney, Virat Kohli came running to exert more pressure on the 25-year-old with other players converging around the Queensland batter, too.

“He’s got no clue! He’s got no clue, Jass (Jasprit Bumrah)!” said Kohli.

Nothing really changes game by game: Mitchell Starc

The Day 1 was a hodgepodge of a situation for the Indian team. They were bowled out for just 180 runs with Mitchell Starc wreaking havoc with a 6-fer. In return, Australia lost Usman Khawaja and piled 86 runs and trailed by 94 runs. Starc, after the first innings, reflected on dismissing India opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal on the very first ball of the match and admitted to have caught a cramp at the end of the innings.

“I don’t know. I can’t tell. Feel like the ball has been coming out well, we did not play that bad, they played better than us in Perth. [on if he visualised getting swing first-ball to Jaiswal] Not that much to be honest. Nothing really changes game by game, was a nice start. [on the weather conditions] Certainly did not help the engine, got a bit cramped at the end,” said Starc.
