In this article, the World Test Championship Points Table Bangladesh made history with a 150-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test in Sylhet on Saturday, December 2. This marked their first-ever Test win against the Kiwis at home, with Taijul Islam being the show’s star. He claimed his 12th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, finishing with an impressive 10-wicket match haul.
The final day began with New Zealand at 113/7, chasing an unlikely 332 for victory. Daryl Mitchell’s resilient 58 kept Bangladesh waiting, but the hosts eventually secured the remaining three wickets to clinch the historic win. Taijul’s outstanding figures of 6-75 in the second innings showcased his pivotal role in the triumph.
Mitchell, supported by Ish Sodhi, delayed the inevitable with a 15-over partnership, attempting to stonewall Bangladesh’s path to victory. However, Mitchell’s dismissal, caught at deep backward square leg off Nayeem Hasan, ended their resistance.
New Zealand captain Tim Southee and Sodhi then opted for an aggressive approach, with Southee hitting sixes off Taijul and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Despite their efforts, Taijul broke through, dismissing Southee attempting a pull, and later claiming Sodhi’s wicket as Bangladesh wrapped up the match in the first session of the final day.
Taijul’s pivotal role on the fourth day, dismantling New Zealand’s top order, set the stage for Bangladesh’s dominance. While Mitchell’s resistance on the final day posed a challenge, Bangladesh completed the job to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
