Western Australia (WA) head coach Adam Voges has opined that flamboyant batter Cameron Bancroft deserves to be called up for the upcoming Ashes series. The statement has come after Bancroft relished a tremendous run with the side, concluding the title-winning season as the leading run-getter with 945 runs in 11 outings.

It is worth noting that WA clinched an unprecedented treble, with wins in all three domestic men’s events after emerging victorious against Victoria in the summit clash of the Sheffield Shield recently. Moreover, it was Bancroft’s and Teague Wyllie’s unbeaten knocks of 39 and 43 runs in the second innings of the summit clash against Victoria, which steered the side to clinch the title.

Impressively, the 30-year-old keeper-batter notched up four centuries and one fifty in his impressive run in the season. Hence, the opener could be one of the candidates poised for selection as far as Australia’s upcoming Ashes tour to England is concerned. WA coach, Voges stated that the batter has been working on improving his game and deserves a place to headline the Ashes for Australia.

“I think he (Cameron Bancroft) deserves a spot on the plane to go to England in the winter. I think you’re always more ready the second time around. He’ll learn from the experiences and he’ll certainly be much better for it. Cameron’s been building to a season like this for a little while now. Technically, I think he’s in a much better space than he has been previously,” Voges was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

He’s technically in a better place: Voges

Following the infamous ball-tampering scandal in 2018, Bancroft was dropped from the national team and subsequently the Western Australia’s Shield team. However, since then the batter has focused upon improving his game and getting back to the squad. Stamping his authority in the 2022-23 season, Voges further added that the batter has been superior in his performances and is in a ‘better place’ technically.

“He’s always had those really remarkable powers of concentration and ability to bat for long periods of time and now that he’s technically in a better place, I think that just allows him to be able to draw on that strength,” Voges added.
