‘Have the rules changed?’ – Mitchell McClenaghan questions spectacular run-out by Virat Kohli against RR in Eliminator

Virat Kohli has always shown his envious fitness in the game and the same happened against Rajasthan Royals in Eliminator to orchestrate an extraordinary run-out. Cameron Green was bowling his first over and Riyan Parag slapped the ball towards the mid-wicket. Kohli stationed there covered the 19-meter run and threw the ball from 52 meters far as Green caught Dhruv Jurel short of his crease. But while dislodging the bails, Green was not in full control of the ball, holding it through the ribs of his palms.

The third umpire after taking ample time gave the decision to be out. However, Former Mumbai Indians pacer, Mitchell McClenaghan was not happy with the decision and he questioned whether the rules have changed. He also added the screenshot from the rule book and asserted his claim that Green was not in full control of the ball and hence the decision was unfair.

“Always thought you had to have the ball held in your hand to cause a runout… have the rules changed?” McClenaghan wrote in a post on X.

“The wicket is broken fairly if a bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or a stump is struck out of the ground by a fielder with his hand or arm, providing that the ball is held in the hand or hands so used, or in the hand of the arm so used,” McClenaghan backed his claim by sharing a screenshot of the rule book.

RCB’s winning streak comes to an end

RCB were coming off a six-match winning streak in the Eliminator against RR on May 22. They were the firm favourites to emerge victorious as they had thwarted Chennai Super Kings in entering the playoffs. But RCB batters had a dismal night as they were on course to set the target. RR chased down the target of 173 with four wickets to spare.
