Star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been out of action ever since his injury during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 fixture against Bangladesh Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. The 30-year-old injured his ankle while trying to stop a boundary off his own bowling and was immediately taken off the field. Pandya was eventually ruled out of the World Cup and Prasidh Krishna was announced as his replacement.

With the T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled to begin in June in the West Indies and the USA, India would desperately need the Gujarat-born cricketer back at his full fitness. Notably, Pandya has been working hard on his road to recovery and even shared glimpses of his training with his fans.

Notably, there were widespread reports claiming that Pandya would be leading the team during the World Cup. The all-rounder has led the side in every series since the T20 World Cup 2022 as regular captain Rohit Sharma hasn’t played a single T20I in the same time period.

India will need a new captain against Afghanistan

However, ever his injury in the World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav led the side in the home series against Australia and in South Africa as well. Reports also claim that he will be unlikely to play in the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan beginning from 11th January.

Pandya has been an integral member of the Indian white-ball teams with 1348 runs to his name in T20Is along with 73 wickets. Hence, it will be a huge task for the team management to find an ideal replacement for the all-rounder.

With both Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav down with injuries, a new face will be seen leading the side in the upcoming series.
