Gujarat Titans have become a force to reckon with in a very short period. Under a new captain, they will look to continue rising the charts and give their passionate fans unbridled joy in the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In November, the Titans made the headlines when they traded their captain Hardik Pandya to the Mumbai Indians, his former IPL home. It surprised many people as the Baroda all-rounder had given the team immense success since its debut season in 2022. Hardik formed great camaraderie with head coach Ashish Nehra and helped the team win the title in 2022. They followed it up with a run to the finals this year, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings off the last ball.

However, they have a special player in their ranks, Shubman Gill, who has been designated as successor to Hardik. The youngster from Punjab has already established himself as one of India’s batting mainstays across the three formats. In IPL 2023, Gill had a dream season as he won the orange cap, amassing 890 runs in 17 innings at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80. He also smashed three centuries and four fifties during his stellar campaign.

Gill is touted by many experts as someone who will take the mantle of being the premier batter of India after Virat Kohli calls time on his international career. The Gujarat management might have got a captain who will serve them for several years. It will be interesting to see whether Gill can carry on the legacy that Hardik had just started to build.

Gujarat Titans make strategic purchases at IPL Auction 2024

Gujarat started with a mammoth purse of Rs 38.15 crore, the highest in the IPL 2024 auction. They had a maximum of eight slots available, including two overseas players.

In the IPL 2024 auction, Gujarat needed to acquire the services of someone who could fill in the huge boots of Hardik. It is tough to replace a player of his calibre as he brings a lot to the table with bat and ball. The Titans bought Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, who impressed the cricket fraternity with his performances during the ODI World Cup 2023. Shahrukh Khan was also roped in by Gujarat for Rs 7.40 crore. The all-rounder has only played a few knocks of note in the IPL but he has done exceedingly well for his state team Tamil Nadu for a number of years.

The Titans also released as many as five pacers. It was important for them to bolster their pace-bowling resources. They picked up the experienced Umesh Yadav and the talented Australian seamer Spencer Johnson to address the issue.

The Vidarbha pacer will be joining forces with compatriots Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma. Indian fans will remember how well they bowled together during the 2015 ODI World Cup where the ‘Men in Blue’ made it to the semifinals. Meanwhile, Johnson has made a name for himself by doing well in different franchise leagues and also made his ODI and T20I debuts earlier this year. Kartik Tyagi and Sushant Mishra are two other young speedsters they acquired in the auction. The Titans also bagged wicketkeeper Robin Minz and left-arm spinner Manav Suthar.
