Star Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell expressed his willingness to feature in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. He featured in the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland earlier in the year but didn’t play any other game. Keeping that in mind, former international David Warner noted that it is difficult for Maxwell to crack into Australia’s Test squad with little experience of red-ball cricket.

The southpaw explained that if Maxwell had played more Sheffield Shield matches, he might have been in the conversation but now, he has nothing to show and in his opinion, the cricketer doesn’t deserve to be named in the squad. He added the importance of grinding hard to get into the Test squad and not just raising hands and confirming availability.

“If you’re not being picked for your Shield team, then why do you deserve it? You’ve got to actually want it, to want to play four-day cricket. Unless he’s putting his hand up, he’s playing all the club cricket stuff and all that, to want to play Test cricket. He in my (opinion), doesn’t deserve that opportunity,” Warner told Code Sport.

“I just don’t think you can keep putting your hand up to say, ‘I want to play just that.’ You know, it’s like me saying I just want to play in Australia, like you’ve gotta be seen to be wanting to do the work grind it out and do that,” he added.

Maxwell has just seven Test appearances for Australia

Notably, Glenn Maxwell has played seven Test matches in his career scoring 339 runs at an average of 26.07. He played his last Test against Bangladesh in 2017. Apart from Maxwell, star spinner Adam Zampa has also raised his hands to confirm his availability for the series against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, both Maxwell and Warner will feature in the upcoming edition of the Big Bash League, slated to begin on December 31.
