Following the blitzkrieg by Wriddhiman Saha, flamboyant opener Shubman Gill carried momentum and propelled Gujarat Titans (GT) to 227 runs in the first innings against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The two franchises locked horns at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 7.
Upon winning the toss, captain of the visiting team, Krunal Pandya opted to field first. What followed was absolute carnage by the opening duo of Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill. During the powerplay (first six overs), Saha did bulk of the scoring to get the big runs whereas Gill remained steady and kept rotating the strike.
The Titans got 78 runs in the powerplay while the rival bowling unit could hardly control the massive leaking of runs. Just when Gill started getting into his zone, the batter cracked a few maximums and began taking control of the innings along with Saha.
The pair raised a vital stand of 100 runs for the first wicket off mere 50 balls. Soon after Lucknow drew curtains on Saha’s impressive innings of 81 off 43 balls, Gill continued to remain in complete command.
Scoring a 50 off 29 balls which featured four sixes, Gill helped injected momentum further in the innings and cruised towards a potential 200-plus score. He raised two important stands with Hardik Pandya and David Miller which hardly provided any respite for the visiting team.
Gill combined with the skipper for a quick 42 off 23 balls and added another stand with Miller, as the duo remained unbeaten to stitch 43 off 24 balls to steer the side to a humongous 227 runs in the first innings. The Gujarat opener concluded with an unconquered knock of 94 off 51 balls, cracking two boundaries and seven sixes with an excellent strike rate of 184.31.
In doing so, the flamboyant right-hander recorded the joint-second highest knock for the Titans in the top-tier league with 94 runs (unbeaten) along with David Miller. Impressively, he also holds the highest score for the franchise with 96 runs against Punjab Kings in 2022. Delighted with his blazing knock, netizens lauded the GT opener.
