The year 2024 saw some amazing performances from cricketers. While some veterans continued to mesmerise the cricket fraternity with their exploits, a plethora of talented youngsters showed that the future of the sport is in good hands.
Most of the focus in international cricket this year was on the T20 format because of the World Cup which took place in June in West Indies and USA. After the marquee event concluded, the attention shifted to the World Test Championship (WTC) as the 2023-25 cycle has reached its business end. The ODIs took a backseat this year but it will hog the limelight over the next few months, with the Champions Trophy scheduled to be held in February-March.
In this article, we take a look at cricketers who scored the most number of runs across formats in international cricket.

5. Joe Root

Joe Root is the only player in the list who did not play a single limited-overs fixture in international cricket in 2024. All his runs came in the longest format of the game, where he went on to achieve several incredible feats.
The right-handed batter scored a whopping 1556 runs from 31 innings in Test cricket. In October, Root surpassed Alastair Cook to become England’s highest run-getter of all time. Root notched up an impressive tally of six centuries and five half-centuries in 2024.
4. Harry Brook

Harry Brook is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in English cricket and he showed his talent on the international stage this year with some consistent performances across formats.
The right-handed batter 1575 runs from 31 innings in 2024. He smashed four centuries in Tests and one in ODI cricket. The 25-year-old registered his highest Test score of 317 against Pakistan at the Multan Cricket Stadium in October.
3. Pathum Nissanka

Pathum Nissanka went from strength to strength this year and established himself as a reliable top-order batter in the international circuit. He is a technically solid batter who scores runs at a fair click by playing orthodox shots, even in the shortest format.
Nissanka scored 1659 runs this year in 41 innings for Sri Lanka. He registered three centuries in ODIs in 2024, including an unbeaten 210 against Afghanistan in Pallekele in February. Nissanka accumulated a total of three ODI centuries and one Test century.
2. Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal made his debut in 2023 and took international cricket like duck to water. He continued his purple patch across formats by playing some memorable knocks at the top of the order for India.
The left-handed batter has not made his debut in ODI cricket as yet. However, he has shown his potential in Test and T20I cricket. From 37 innings in 2024, Yashasvi amassed 1771 runs. In Tests and ODIs, maintaining averages of over 50 and 40, respectively.
1. Kusal Mendis

Kusal Mendis finished as the highest run-getter in international cricket across fromats in 2024. The Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter played several match-winning knocks that will be remembered by cricket aficionados for a long time.
Kusal always had the talent but consistency wasn’t his forte. While his returns were decent in Tests and T20Is, he set the ODI stage ablaze with some solid performances. He finished with an average of 53 in the 50-over format. Overall, in 54 innings, Kusal scored 1850 runs in 2024. He ended the year as the highest run-getter.
