‘Finding that tempo can be difficult’ – Will Jacks on England’s struggle to find rhythm in ODI cricket

England lost the opening two ODIs of the five-match series against Australia but bounced back with a win in the third one. Despite so, some of the players were seen struggling to cope with the format and that’s a worrying sign, keeping the Champions Trophy 2025 in mind. With many senior players such as Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes missing due to injury or retirement, England have named a young side, which hasn’t played much cricket together.

Speaking on the same, Will Jacks stated that the players haven’t played enough 50-over cricket recently and that they have struggled to find tempo. He mentioned that the format isn’t played quite often, which has bothered their growth. He expects the team to gel better in the coming times after spending more time together to find success on a consistent basis.

“With the lack of 50-over cricket that we play now, finding that tempo can be difficult. The schedule only allows what it allows and that’s for people above us (to determine). We just go where we’re told. I think when you’re leading up to a major event, you are going to play more but with the way TV is now… that’s out of our control,” Jacks was quoted as saying by The Mirror.

“This is our first time together as a squad so it’s going to take time to get there but we’re progressing every game and hopefully when we come back next time we’ll be one step further,” he added.

Notably, Jacks played a crucial knock of 84 runs in England’s win over Australia by 46 runs (DLS method) in the third ODI. He stitched a crucial partnership of 156 runs with captain Harry Brook, which defined the fate of the game. Following the knock, Jacks arguably cemented his spot in the ODI team and will play a crucial part in the middle order going forward.
