In response to growing concerns over contract-related challenges affecting domestic cricket leagues, the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) has introduced a new initiative designed to elevate professionalism within these competitions.
Following a thorough examination of various top men’s and women’s domestic leagues, FICA uncovered troubling statistics, revealing that one in four players encounter issues such as delayed or unpaid salaries. Furthermore, instances of resistance to players’ unions have been observed within these leagues.
Tom Moffat, the Chief Executive of FICA, stressed the importance of tackling issues related to inconsistencies in player treatment amid the proliferation of domestic leagues worldwide. He likened the current scenario to the ‘Wild West’, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges players face in this evolving landscape.
“The growth of domestic leagues around the world has been a great thing for cricket and has provided new opportunities for players. However, inconsistencies with the treatment of players have led to the landscape being considered by many as the ‘Wild West,” FICA Chief Executive Tom Moffat said in a statement, as quoted by Sportstar.
The recently launched Leagues Hub by FICA is intended to serve as a comprehensive platform, consolidating information on the status of each league and the challenges faced within them. This initiative aims to empower players, agents, and players’ associations with valuable insights to enhance the treatment of players across domestic cricket leagues.

Moffat stressed the importance of establishing global standards and bolstering accountability in the domestic cricket arena to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders, particularly players. He advocated for the implementation of minimum contract standards and good salary enforcement mechanisms as crucial steps toward this objective.
“FICA continues to advocate for fit-for-purpose global regulation and increased accountability in the domestic leagues landscape to protect all stakeholders, including players. This should include contract minimum standards and effective pay enforcement mechanisms, for example,” he added.
Through the Leagues Hub, FICA has already shed light on reported payment delays in prominent leagues such as the Indian Premier League, Pakistan Super League, and Lanka Premier League, underscoring the widespread nature of the issue.
