The appointment of Gautam Gambhir as head coach of the Indian team was made with the intention of continued progress in the right direction. However, it has been anything but that so far. The recent debacle in the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has only worsened circumstances for Gambhir and the team.

Former Indian cricketer, Harbhajan Singh, compared the pre and post-Gambhir eras and openly questioned where things seemed to have gone wrong for the Indian side.

“Everything was fine till Rahul Dravid was there. India won the World Cup, and everything was fine. But what happened suddenly? In the past six months, we lost to Sri Lanka, a series whitewash against New Zealand, and now a 3-1 defeat in Australia. Everything seems to have fallen apart,” shared Harbhajan in a recent video posted on his YouTube channel.

India should leave behind the superstar attitude: Harbhajan

The former World Cup winner urged the selectors to give up the fame-driven glorification which has been dished out since quite some time and was of the opinion that only the players performing should be shortlisted for India’s next red-ball assignment.

“Every player has a reputation. If this is the thing, then add Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, or those who have been India’s biggest match-winners. BCCI and selectors should take hold. India should leave behind the superstar attitude. Abhimanyu Easwaran was taken on tour, but he didn’t play. He can become a player for India if he is given the opportunity. Sarfaraz is the same case. The player who performs should go [to England]. You should not pick players on reputation,” added Harbhajan.

So far, India have suffered three crushing defeats with Gambhir at the helm. Wins in the T20I series against Sri Lanka and Test series against Bangladesh have clearly been overshadowed by the 0-2 loss to Sri Lanka in the ODI series, the whitewash to New Zealand, and the 3-1 defeat against Australia. The upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy is expected to be a crucial juncture for Gambhir & Co.
