England’s T20 World Cup history from 2007-2024: Stats, Records milestones, and more

T20 Cricket came into existence in 2002 when England decided to introduce this format. While the format took off the Three Lions took a few years to find their feet and become a force to be reckoned with. England are one of the two teams to have won the T20 World Cup twice as the West Indians have done. England head into the 2024 edition as the defending champions have beaten Pakistan in the final of the 2022 campaign.

Here is a look at England’s journey through each of the T20 World Cups so far:

T20 World Cup 2007, South Africa 

England entered the T20 World Cup in South Africa and placed in the same group as Australia and Zimbabwe. England began their group phase matches with a win over Zimbabwe and promptly lost to Australia in the next match. They made it to the Super 8 stages thanks to their run rate. In the next phase, England finished last in the table losing all their games. One of the notable occurrences saw Stuart Broad being smashed by Yuvraj Singh for 6 sixes in an over. Kevin Pietersen was the best batter with 178 runs from 5 matches while Andrew Flintoff’s 5 wickets was the best effort by an England bowler.

T20 World Cup 2009, England 

England hosted the 2009 edition and yet again failed to make it to the semi-finals. The tournament began with a shock loss to Holland before beating Pakistan to make sure they entered the Super 8s. Barring a win over then-champions India, the home team did not impress in the tournament as they crashed out before the semi-finals. Stuart Broad’s six wickets was the best haul by an English bowler while Kevin Pietersen was top scorer with 154 runs.

T20 World Cup 2010, West Indies 

Paul Collingwood and his England team won their first-ever ICC title when they stunned the world to take home the title in the 2010 edition. England began with a loss to West Indies before a rained-out game against Ireland gave them their first point. In the Super 8 stages, England beat Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa to make it to the final four. In the semi-finals, they beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets. Up against Arch Rivals Australia, England won the tournament by 7 wickets to stand atop the podium. Kevin Pietersen was the top scorer for the third edition in a row with 248 runs while Graeme Swann picked 10 wickets.

T20 World Cup 2012, Sri Lanka 

England came into the 2012 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka looking to become the first-ever side to retain it. After a win over Afghanistan, England lost to India but that didn’t stop their progress to the Super 8 stage. Loss to West Indies was followed by a win over New Zealand. Needing to win against Sri Lanka to make it to the semis, England lost by 19 runs to exit the tournament in a very meek manner. Luke Wright with 193 runs with a best of 99 not out was the best batter for England, while Steve Finn with 8 wickets was the best bowler for the Three Lions.

T20 World Cup 2014, Bangladesh 

With just one win from four matches, England didn’t set the stage on fire in Bangladesh during the 2014 edition. The former World Cup winners managed to beat Sri Lanka thanks to a century by Alex Hales but lost to South Africa and New Zealand. Their lowest point in the tournament was when they lost to the Dutch for the second time this time getting bowled out for just 88 runs. The dismal tournament saw Chris Jordan pick 4 wickets to be the best bowler for England, while Alex Hales was the leading scorer with 166 runs.

T20 World Cup 2016, India

After two dismal performances in the last two editions, England came up with a team that nearly won the title in 2016. England were in the first group in the Super Ten stage where they began by losing to the West Indies. In the next game, England chased down 230 runs to win against South Africa to set the then-highest chase in T20 cricket. Wins against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan saw the English meet New Zealand in the semis which they won by 7 wickets. Carlos Braithwaite’s four legendary sixes off Ben Stokes sealed the deal as England lost in the most dramatic fashion. David Willey led the way with the ball with ten wickets while Joe Root’s 249 runs were the best by an England batter.

T20 World Cup 2021, India/UAE

England came into 2021 with some of their players in prime form. Barring a loss to South Africa the three lions had won four out of the five group phase matches. Just when it seemed that England was set to win their 2nd title. New Zealand ended their party as the Kiwis beat the England side by 7 wickets with Daryl Mitchell scoring 72 not out. It was a sad end for the Three Lions who were looking to meet Australia for the second time in the final. Jos Buttler’s 269 runs were the best for England in the 2021 WC with the bat while Adil Rashid’s 9 wickets saw him top the honours for England with the ball.

T20 World Cup 2022, Australia

Jos Buttler and his England side nearly played a flawless tournament and won their 2nd T20 World Cup and became the first team to hold both the white ball ICC titles. England began the Super Ten stages winning three games and losing one to Ireland. In the semis, England chase down the 170 needed to win without losing a wicket and bundling India out of the campaign. The final saw England take on Pakistan which they won by 5 wickets with Ben Stokes scoring 52 not out to help his team take the title. Jos Buttler with 225 runs was the highest scorer while Sam Curran’s 13 wickets was the most by an England bowler.
