England have announced a strong 16-member squad for the T20I leg of the Women’s Ashes series. All-rounder Issy Wong, who was not considered in the squad for the T20 World Cup in South Africa earlier this year, has been recalled to the England squad.
The 21-year-old’s performances grabbed all the limelight during the Women’s Premier League 2023 season. Wong picked up 15 wickets in 10 innings with a strike rate of 13 and an economy rate of 6.4. Her heroics with the ball helped Mumbai clinch the inaugural WPL season and also helped her way back into the national set-up.
Along with Wong, Danielle Gibson received her first call-up to the team. The all-rounder travelled as a reserve with the team during the World Cup and was also a member of the squad for the one-off Ashes Test last week.
“We’re really looking forward to our T20s in the next part of our Ashes Series. It’s great to have them back with us. A number of those chosen players have performed very well for England A against Australia A,” Jon Lewis was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
“Danielle Gibson is chosen for our T20 team for the first time; she has been playing well at the regional level and has the ability to have an influence on the game whenever she is called upon.”
“Issy Wong rejoins the T20 squad following her success with the Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League. It will be fascinating to observe how she has developed and expanded her game as a result of those high-voltage WPL encounters.”, said Lewis.
The first T20I match between England and Australia will take place at Edgbaston on July 1; the second and the third game will be played on June 5 and 8, respectively, at Kia Oval and Lords.
