The West Indies and England kicked off their Test series at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London from July 10. The clash began with the West Indies coming in to bat first after losing the toss. The visitors got off to a subpar start as openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis scored six and 27 runs, respectively.

Kirk McKenzie was dismissed early for just one run as well; Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge scored 23 and 24 runs, respectively. England’s bowling attack did a remarkable job of limiting the West Indies to a subpar total.

Jason Holder and Joshua Da Silva were dismissed for ducks, with Alzarri Joseph scoring 17 runs in the process. The West Indies only managed to post a total of 121 runs before they were bundled out in the first innings.

As for England, Gus Atkinson was the highest wicket-taker for his side in the first innings. Atkinson put in a performance of a lifetime, taking seven wickets and conceding 45 runs in the 12 overs that he bowled. Furthermore, James Anderson, who is playing the final match of his career, took one wicket as well. Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes took one wicket each as well.

As England came out to bat, the side got off to a subpar start as opener Ben Duckett departed on a score of three runs. However, Zak Crawley played a marvellous innings to stabilise England’s position in the game. Crawley scored 76 runs in 89 deliveries, alongside Ollie Pope, who added 57 runs in 74 deliveries.

Day 1 of the first Test ended with Joe Root and Harry Brook staying unbeaten by 15 and 25 runs, respectively. England scored 189 runs with the loss of three wickets as Day 1 ended. As the second day approaches, the hosts will look to extend their lead of 68 runs even further.
