New Zealand cricketer Kane Williamson has scripted history by becoming the highest-ever scorer for New Zealand in the red-ball format, surpassing his former teammate Ross Taylor.

Williamson achieved this feat in the second Test in Wellington on Day 4, against England. Resuming from his overnight score of 25, it took him just one delivery to reach the landmark. He garnered applause from the spectators and his teammates from the dressing room, alike.

Taylor congratulates Williamson in a special post

Ross Taylor, who initally held the record of scoring most Test runs for his country for many years, showered praise on Williamson. He took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to post a congratulatory message for Williamson on his spectacular accomplishment.

“Congratulations Kane for becoming NZ’s highest Test run-scorer. This achievement is a testament to your hard work and dedication to Test Cricket, of which I was privy to for a number of years. Here’s to many more,” the 38-year-old posted with a red wine emoji.

Williamson needed only four more runs to surpass Taylor, and the 32-year-old, appearing in his 92nd Test, achieved the landmark in the very first over of the day’s play. He clipped James Anderson’s delivery towards the mid-on for a boundary. The crowd erupted in appreciation to congratulate Williamson. In his trademark style, Williamson responded with a calm acknowledgement by raising his bat in the air.

Williamson has 7683 Test runs against his name. His innings has helped New Zealand to take a lead in the Test match, as the Kiwis were asked to follow-on by England. New Zealand will be hoping against hope to salvage some pride by winning the Wellington Test.

The stylish right-handed batter was going through a lean patch in the series. This achievement will surely encourage him to regain his mojo.
