Iconic Indian batter, Virat Kohli, the leading run-scorer in the history of the T20 World Cups, has endured a sequence of uncharacteristically low scores (1, 4, and 0), falling short of the towering standards he has set over the years. Consequently, the highly talented youngster, Yashasvi Jaiswal, finds himself waiting in the wings due to the continued backing Kohli has gotten as the ninth edition of the marquee event progresses. This situation has ignited numerous debates and discussions within the cricketing fraternity and among a superfluity of pundits.

Former Australian captain, Michael Clarke, recently spoke on the same issue and contributed his perspective. In a recent discussion, he emphasized that the decision rested entirely with the team management, asserting that if they believe it’s their optimal XI, they should retain him at the opening slot. He defended Kohli by echoing the prevailing sentiment that the pitch at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium posed challenges, particularly for opening batters. He also emphasized that three low scores would not diminish the aura and confidence of a player of Kohli’s stature.

“I think if they feel that’s their best 11, then keep him there. He has been playing on a pitch that has been tough for opening batters. I don’t think three low scores make any difference to Kohli,” stated Clarke, as per ESPNcricinfo.

Virat is one step closer to a big knock: Clarke

Clarke expressed his belief that the team management placed Kohli in the opening slot due to his outstanding performance in IPL 2024 (earning the Orange Cap with 741 runs in 15 innings). He personally dismissed concerns over Kohli’s recent low scores, viewing them as a precursor to an imminent breakthrough with a substantial innings. Clarke also highlighted the significance of the tournament’s crucial stage, where top players typically excel, hinting at a high-stakes player such as Kohli’s ability to thrive under pressure and embrace challenges to lead his team in pivotal moments by delivering exceptional performances.

“But, they’ve gone with him at the top of the order where he bats in the IPL. He had a great IPL, so you can understand their reason for doing that. I wouldn’t be concerned about three low scores. All that means to me that he’s one step closer to making a big one. It’s the most important stage as well where the best players usually stand up,” added Clarke.
