The All-India Senior Selection Committee, on Monday, May 8, named Ishan Kishan as KL Rahul’s replacement in the India squad for the World Test Championship final 2023. India will be locking horns with Australia in the summit clash from June 7 at The Oval in London. Notably, Rahul suffered an injury to his right upper thigh while trying to stop a boundary during match No. 43 of IPL 2023 between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 1.
Following some scans, the cricketer was ruled out of the big clash and will be undergoing surgery, followed by rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
Meanwhile, Kishan earned his maiden call-up to the Test team for the recent four-match Test series between India and Australia played in February-March 2023. The 24-year-old did not get a chance to play in any of the four games and was later dropped for the WTC final squad, where Rahul was the ‘supposed backup wicketkeeping option’ apart from KS Bharat. However, the injury to the LSG captain has paved the way for Kishan’s selection for the all-important game.
The southpaw has played 48 first-class matches scoring 2985 runs at an average of 38.76 with six hundreds and 16 fifties to his name. In the recent Ranji Trophy 2022-23, Kishan scored 180 runs from four innings at an average of 45 with one hundred to his name.
In the ongoing IPL 2023, the Bihar-born batter has 293 runs to his name from ten innings and has scored just two half-centuries. Following Rahul’s injury, there were widespread discussions of a possible return of Wriddhiman Saha back into the Indian Test team, who has put up some marvellous performances in the ongoing IPL.
Saha scored 313 runs in Ranji Trophy 2022-23 at an average of 52.16
In the Ranji Trophy 2022-23, Saha was in sublime form as he scored 313 runs from seven innings at an average of 52.16 with one hundred and two fifties to his name. However, despite his good show in red-ball cricket and the ongoing IPL, the veteran wicket-keeper batter was ignored for selection.
Meanwhile, Kishan’s selection in the Indian team has not gone down well, with numerous fans who’re bashing the selection committee for once again committing a blunder.
