Afghanistan pulled off a historic win against Australia in the Super Eight stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Batting first, the side posted a total of 148 runs in the first innings, and followed it up with a sensational performance with the ball limiting the Aussies to a subpar total and winning the game.

The likes of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Gulbadin Naib were the stars of the match. Opening the innings for Afghanistan, Gurbaz scored 60 runs in 49 deliveries, whereas Naib followed it up with a sensational performance with the ball, where he conceded 20 runs in four overs and took four wickets in the process.

The win saw many fans come forward and state that Afghanistan pulled off a major upset against Australia, a statement that did not sit well with former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer. Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Jaffer opined that it would be disrespectful to Afghanistan to name the win against Australia as an upset.

“Do not disrespect Afghanistan by calling this an upset. AFG are good enough to beat any team on their day. They played to their potential today and defeated a very good Aus team. A fact that should be celebrated. Congratulations and well played @ACBofficials #AUSvAFG,” Jaffer tweeted.

It’s a massive win for us as a team and nation: Rashid Khan

After the win, Afghanistan’s skipper, Rashid Khan, came forward to highlight what it means for the country to defeat Australia on the biggest stage. He expressed how sweet this victory feels after their loss to the Aussies in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.

“It’s a massive win for us as a team and nation. Beating Australia is a great feeling. It is something we missed out, in 2023 ODI World Cup and also the 2022 World Cup in Australia. (Gurbaz-Ibrahim stand) Quite important for us that we went back to the same XI. But also its about the opposition, we wanted to post our best XI, that’s why we had made changes in the India game,” Rashid Khan said.
