Dinesh Karthik makes huge revelation regarding Delhi Capitals’ captaincy

Dinesh Karthik, a former Delhi Capitals player, seemingly revealed that Axar Patel will be leading the franchise in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. However, there has been no official confirmation from the franchise regarding this.

Axar has been with the Capitals since 2019. He got the experience of leading the franchise last season when he had to step in for Rishabh Pant in one of the games. The left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder from Gujarat was retained by the Capitals for a staggering INR 18 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, his appointment as the captain will mean that KL Rahul, who was roped in for INR 14 crore at the auction, will play as a specialist batter for the first time since the 2020 season.

“For Axar Patel, all the very best (for India vice-captaincy). A good opportunity for him. He is going to be the Delhi Capitals’ captain as well. So here is a good opportunity for him to lead and show the way. He has been doing that for Gujarat as well. So, wish him all the luck,” Karthik said during Cricbuzz’s HeyCB with DK show.

Axar was named as the vice-captain of the Indian team for the first time when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England. However, Rahul has the experience of leading two IPL franchises in the past.

He led Punjab in IPL 2020 and 2021 and then Lucknow Super Giants ahead of IPL 2022. He spearheaded LSG for three consecutive seasons. Rahul has batted at the top of the order in the last few seasons in the IPL. However, he bats at No. 5 for India in ODI cricket. It will be interesting to see how the Capitals management use him in the upcoming season.
