Australia is gearing up for yet another edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25). Taking on India in the five-game series, the Pat Cummins-led side will hope to put in a good showing and break their losing streak against India in the BGT.

It is worth noting that Australia is yet to announce their squad for the series, and many have been backing the inclusion of youngster Sam Konstas in the side. Representing New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield, Konstas has been impressive. Talking of the same, Australia head coach, Andrew McDonald, recently came forward and discussed Konstas’ potential inclusion in the side for the marquee series. He admitted that his performance in the Sheffield Shield has definitely turned some heads.

“Any time we’re picking a Test team, we’re picking the best team for here and now. If that does encompass a younger player, then we’ll head down that direction. Clearly Sam Konstas on the back of his first Shield match, and the way he went about his work in the second innings at the MCG against Scott Boland has definitely made some noise,” McDonald told ABC TV’s Offsiders.

If they’re ready, they’re ready in our mind: McDonald

Furthermore, McDonald talked about how the opposition does not matter if the player in question is capable enough. He opined that if Sam Konstas is deemed ready, he could well be included in the series against India.

“If they’re ready, they’re ready in our mind, and if Sam’s capable and we feel as though he’s capable to fill that spot, I don’t think the opponent should come into the equation. You’ve got to start against someone, and you shouldn’t be so-called holding back and protecting someone from a potential opponent.”

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 will kick off in Perth with India taking on Australia in the first Test from November 22. Having lost the series against New Zealand, India will hope to improve and retain the trophy.
