'Decision for the 20th over was easy' - Suryakumar Yadav spills beans on tactic behind Rinku Singh bowling 19th over

Suryakumar Yadav stunned everyone by introducing Rinku Singh to bowl the penultimate over against Sri Lanka in the third T20I on July 30. The hosts needed just nine runs in 12 balls with six wickets at their disposal as Rinku conceded three runs while picking two wickets. The 19th over proved to be impactful as India dragged the game to a Super Over. Suryakumar revealed that he felt Rinku was best suited.

It is worth noting that the India captain had an option of going with either Mohammed Siraj or Khaleel Ahmed as both had one over left. Later when only three runs were leaked in the 19th over, Suryakumar conceded just five runs and India won the Super Over on back of Washington Sundar’s two wickets. Mr 360 added that bowling the 20th over was easy but the penultimate over was where dust needed to be settled.

“The decision for the 20th over was easy; the difficult part was for the 19th over. Siraj and a few others had their overs left. But I felt Rinku was better suited for that wicket because I have seen him bowling and I made him practice a lot at the nets. I felt it was right and that is why I took that call,” said Suryakumar as quoted by TOI.

“I knew the 19th over has always been difficult for Indian cricket (laughs). That is why I gave the responsibility to Rinku. For a right-hander bowling to a left- hander, it is always difficult for the batter. It was great that he made the best use of his skill and made my work easy because now I have one more bowling option going forward,” he added.
