Mumbai Indians’ winning streak of five matches against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Chennai finally ended as they got defeated by six wickets in Match 49 of IPL 2023. Sri Lanka pacer, Matheesha Pathirana, took figures of 3/15 (4), while Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande also snared two scalps each as CSK restricted the visitors to just 139/8 (20) eventually winning the ‘El Clasico’.

 

Speaking about how the game panned out, skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to field first in cloudy conditions. Openers Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green got dismissed cheaply for seven and six runs respectively while captain Rohit Sharma bagged his consecutive duck. With this, he now holds the unwanted record of most nought (16) in the history of the league. Youngster Nehal Wadhera smashed 66 off 51 as MI reached a total of above 135.

 

In reply, Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 30 off 16 while his opener partner Devon Conway struck 44 off 42. Hard-hitter Shivam Dube remained unbeaten on 26 off 18 as the Men in Yellow chased down the target comfortably in 17.4 overs. With this, the Super Kings have now defeated their bitter rivals in both the league games of a season only for the second time with the previous instance coming way back in 2014. For his solid spell, Pathirana grabbed the Player of the Match award.
