Cricket Australia unveils path to mourn on Phillip Hughes’ 10th death anniversary

Former Australia cricketer, Phillip Hughes breathed his last after the ball hit him in the neck area during South Australia’s game against New South Wales in 2014. Hughes remained not out on 63 and the day is marked as the black day in Australian cricket’s history. Almost 10 years after the untimely demise of Hughes, Cricket Australia is poised to hold a mourning across its cricketing pantheon.

Not only Australia, but the whole cricket fraternity will remember the huge loss caused to the game. The board has decided to fly flags at half-mast and black players will don the armbands on their uniforms to mark the 10-year anniversary of Phillip Hughes’ death. Two weeks of commemorations will undergo with the Sheffield Shield round commencing on November 23.

As per ESPNCricinfo, the schedule is duly aligned as Hughes’ former team South Australia will play against Western Australia in Adelaide from Saturday. New South Wales, his childhood team, will play Tasmania at the SCG from Sunday. Queensland will tussle with Victoria, at the iconic Gabba. All three games will see players donning armbands and observing a moment of silence before the games commence.

It is worth noting that the games played in Sydney and Brisbane will see their final day coinciding with the 10-year anniversary of Hughes’ death on November 27, 2014. Speaking of Hughes’ mourning during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25), the board has shared the course of action with the Hughes family and has zeroed in on the Adelaide Test to conduct the mourning.

The Adelaide Test will begin from December 6 and Cricket Australia will mark the passing of Hughes with his 10th death anniversary and resume Test cricket in Australia on Day 1. The board has also filmed a documentary keeping his family members in light and the same will be broadcast before play in that Test.
