BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently opened up about two controversial issues in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Impact Player Rule and the future of mega auctions. His revelation came after meeting with IPL franchise owners on July 31, where these topics were extensively discussed.

The Impact Player Rule, introduced in IPL 2023, has been a subject of debate among players, coaches, and fans. While broadcasters favor the innovation, many have criticized its effects on the game’s balance. Addressing the Impact Player Rule, Shah acknowledged both its merits and drawbacks.

“We had a long chat about this in the recent meeting with the franchise owners. We had a long chat among our domestic teams also. There are positives and negatives to it. The negative is that it affects the all-rounders and the positive side is that it gives an opportunity to an extra Indian player. We should think about the broadcasters also. For me as an administrator, the game is important. Let’s see what feedback we’re getting,” he said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

The rule’s future in domestic cricket, particularly in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), remains uncertain. Shah indicated that a decision would be made within a week, considering the feedback from various quarters.

“There are so many matches to be conducted. We make sure each team gets an equal number of morning and night matches. We’ve addressed the issue of the Ranji Trophy games being affected by the weather last time. We will hold games after winter in the North while in the East and West the games will be held before the winter,” he added.

Nothing is confirmed, We will collectively decide: Jay Shah

Regarding the IPL mega auction, Shah revealed a divide among franchise owners. Shah said that the shuffling of players is important as it will help in growing the game and bring out a more competitive spirit amongst the teams.

“We’ve heard the views of all the franchises. For us a minority view is as important as the majority opinion. Ultimately the office-bearers (of the BCCI) will decide. Those who have a good side said there is no need for the big auction and those without a good side wanted the big auction. Continuity is important as shuffling, for the growth of the game,” he further added.

He assured that the BCCI would give equal weight to minority and majority opinions in making the final decision and touched upon other IPL-related matters, including the potential expansion to 84 games per season and the addition of a sixth team to the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

However, he stressed that these decisions are not final and would be made collectively, considering factors such as player workload and available time windows.

“Nothing is confirmed. We will collectively decide. We’ve to factor in the workload of the players and the window also. It’s in the contract but it is up to the BCCI to decide. Once I’m confident that we can add more women players into the mix, we will add an extra side,” he concluded.
