‘Chapter closed!!’ – David Warner confirms retirement but keeps door open for Champions Trophy 2025 berth

David Warner’s international career came to an end with Australia’s underwhelming outing at the T20 World Cup 2024. The flamboyant batter will no longer be seen representing Australia in professional cricket. Earlier he had announced his retirement from Tests and ODIs, with the T20Is his last bastion. Though the opener lacked his usual touch at the marquee event, he has given a lot to the sport and has said goodbye in style with a post on Instagram.

Warner has been the go-to opener for Australia across formats and his partners kept changing while he stuck to his spot. It is worth noting that he has played more than 100 games in every format for Australia, something he takes pride in, and is the only Aussie to do so. In his post, he said that he would continue gracing the franchise leagues and also hoped to represent Australia once more if provided an opportunity in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.

“Chapter closed!! It’s been an unbelievable experience to play at the highest level for such a long period. Australia was my team. The majority of my career was at the international level. It’s been an honour to be able to do this. 100+ games in all formats is my highlight. I want to say thanks to everyone out there who has made this possible. My wife and my girls, who sacrificed so much, thank you for all your support. No person will ever know what we’ve been through,” Warner captioned in his post.

“For all the cricket fans out there, I truly hope I have entertained you and changed cricket, especially tests, in a way where we scored a bit faster than others. We cannot do what we love without the fans, so thanks. I will continue to play franchise cricket for a while, and I am also open to playing for Aus in the Champions trophy if selected. To the players and staff, thanks for putting up with me. No more what’s app junk, your ears are now going to be free of my voice. Australia eye resurgence in Pakistan

The Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to be held in Pakistan, making an ICC event gracing the country after nearly three decades. Australia had a dismal outing in the T20 World Cup 2024, having lost a game to Afghanistan and succumbed to India in a must-win game. The Aussies have dominated the 50-over format winning the latest World Cup 2023 by beating India in the final. They have won the Champions Trophy twice and the upcoming event will be on their to-do list again.
