Former Pakistan cricketer Younis Khan was recently announced as the new mentor of Afghanistan for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. An ACB (Afghanistan Cricket Board) official confirmed the development, and it is also worth noting that Younis Khan served as the side’s batting coach in 2022.

Widely revered as one of the greatest Pakistan cricketers of all time, Younis Khan was an influential figure for the country during his time. Amassing 10,099 runs in 118 Tests, he also became the No. 1 player in the ICC rankings.

“ACB has assigned former experienced top order Pakistani player Younis Khan as Mentor for Champions Trophy 2025. He (Younis) will join the team before the event starts in Pakistan,” Sayeed Naseem Sadat, the spokesman of ACB, confirmed to Cricbuzz.

Afghanistan looks to put on a good show in Champions Trophy 2025

Speaking of Afghanistan cricket, the side is all set to participate in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. The team will kick off their campaign against South Africa. Both sides will lock horns at the National Stadium, Karachi, on February 21.

Afghanistan will hope to put in a good showing and get off to a good start to their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. It is worth noting Afghanistan will face off against England in the second game of the tournament, and recently, there were calls within the ECB to boycott Afghanistan cricket.

A group of politicians from the UK had urged the ECB to decide to boycott Afghanistan cricket due to the Taliban’s law banning female participation in sports.

However, according to reports, the ECB maintained their stance that they would follow what every nation decides to do, and cannot take a decision alone. The ECB strongly condemns the treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime. The ICC constitution mandates that all member nations are committed to the growth and development of women’s cricket. In line with this commitment, the ECB has maintained its position of not scheduling any bilateral cricket matches against Afghanistan,” ECB chief executive, Richard Gould replied.
