Bangladesh suffered a five-wicket defeat to West Indies in the first ODI at Warner Park in St Kitts. The batters did a commendable job as Tanzid Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Mahmudullah scored 60, 74, and 50 runs respectively. Later, keeper-batter Jaker Ali made 48 runs off 40 deliveries as the visitors posted 294 runs on the board in the first innings.
They started well with the ball as West Indies were reduced to 27/2. However, Bangladesh failed to keep up with the momentum and Sherfane Rutherford and Shai Hope capitalized on that. Rutherford smashed 113 runs off 80 deliveries while Hope supported him well, scoring 86. Their partnership of 99 runs and later, Justin Greaves’ unbeaten 41-run knock sealed it for West Indies.
After the game, captain Miraz reflected on the performance and noted that it was challenging for the bowlers. He stated that the bowling unit has done well and expects them to learn how to handle pressure. The 27-year-old added that there were plenty of positives for the visitors, especially from the batting point of view.
“It is challenging in their own backyard and our bowlers despite bowling well could learn a lot from these kinds of matches like how to handle pressure… they will learn from these kinds of matches and I feel there are lots of positives from this game for us,” Miraz said as quoted by Cricbuzz.
“When I started, a set batsman got out and in fact two set batters got out as Tanzim was out and after doing a partnership Afif also I could not take risk because I knew if a set batsman gets out, it would be a pressure for the new batsman and so I tried to continue. And when Riyad [Mahmudullah] bhai got set I tried to take the charge. The way Jaker Ali and Riyad bhai finished was brilliant and if that was not the case the runs could [have been] lesser but we played well as a batting unit,” he explained when asked about the batting unit.
