India and Australia played out a dream day for bowlers at the Optus Stadium in Perth to get the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy rolling.

India’s brand-new opening pair of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal started very cautiously until Jaiswal nicked one to gully to go for a duck. Devdutt Padikkal too was measured but fell for a 29-ball duck. Josh Hazlewood (4 for 29) kept the pressure up on the Indians throughout the session, and after Rahul departed following a contentious DRS call, India found themselves 47/4. Mitchell Marsh then struck in quick succession to leave India reeling at 73/6 before Rishabh Pant (37 off 78) and Test debutant K Nitish Kumar Reddy (41 off 59) added 48 for the eighth wicket – it would go on to be the highest partnership of the day. Reddy upped the tempo after Pant’s dismissal but fell last with a team total of 150.

India and their captain Jasprit Bumrah (4 for 17) responded with similar intensity with the ball. Bumrah’s lengthy opening spell had left the Australians reeling at 19/3 after seven overs including the prized wicket of Steve Smith off the first ball. Mohammed Siraj and India’s other debutant, Harshit Rana, then piled on the misery to leave Australia 67/7 at stumps and India sniffing a first-innings lead.

Here are the notable stats from the day:

2021 – The last time India played a Test with neither R Ashwin nor Ravindra Jadeja in the playing XI was the famous Gabba Test in 2021. India played 38 Tests in between that game and this one with either or both of them in the XI.

5 – The 23 balls that Devdutt Padikkal faced for his duck are the fifth most in a Test innings by an Indian player. The top spot is shared by Irfan Pathan and Suresh Raina who made 29-ball ducks at various points.

26 – KL Rahul became the 26th player to make 3000 Test runs for India. Rahul’s batting average of 33.78 is the third-lowest among these players behind only R Ashwin and Kapil Dev.

1 – With 661 runs, Rishabh Pant overtook Alan Knott to become the visiting wicketkeeper with the most Test runs in Australia.

7 – Nitish Kumar Reddy became the seventh Indian player to top score on Test debut batting at No. 8 or lower. Stuart Binny in 2014 was the last player to do so.

2 – India’s 150 is their joint-second lowest total in the first innings in Australia. India had been bowled out for 58 at Brisbane in 1958 and for 150 at Sydney in 2000.

1 – In Tests that they have played together, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins became the first quartet to take 500 wickets. The quartet now have 505 wickets in Tests that they have played together.

2 – This was only the second time in his Test career that Steve Smith was bowled out for a golden duck. The previous instance was against South Africa at Gqeberha in 2014 to the bowling of Dale Steyn.

2 – Marnus Labuschagne’s strike rate of 3.84 in his 2(52) is the second lowest in Test history (where known) by a top order who batted a minimum of 50 balls in an innings. Colin Croft batted 53 balls to score just 1 run at a strike rate of 1.89 against Pakistan in 1980.

4 –  With 36 wickets, Jasprit Bumrah crossed Bishan Singh Bedi to become the 4th highest wicket-taker for India in Tests in Australia. There is a high chance that he might cross R Ashwin’s tally of 38 tomorrow to move to third on the list.
