The much-awaited Lanka Premier League 2023 auction was held at the Shangri La Hotel in Colombo on Wednesday, June 14. Notably, it was the first-ever auction of the T20 extravaganza, which will be played in its original window for the first time since Covid-19 and will take place from July 31 to August 22.

The league was founded in 2018 by Sri Lanka Cricket and has five teams contesting for the coveted title. Jaffna Stallions won the inaugural edition as they beat Galle Gladiators by 53 runs in the final. Jaffna Kings went on to win the next two editions as well.

Kandy had a great season in 2022 editions, finishing on the top of the points table as they won seven out of their eight league games. Led by Wanindu Hasaranga, they managed to reach the Qualifier 2 but lost against Colombo Stars by six wickets. In the 2021 edition, led by Angelo Perera, they failed to qualify for the knockouts and finished on the last spot with two wins from eight matches.

In the inaugural edition in 2020 as well, they finished on the last spot, led-by Kusal Perera. After a marvellous show in the previous edition, they will be eager to go one step ahead and win the title in the upcoming edition.
