West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran has been very consistent in the shortest format of the game in the last couple of years. Ahead of representing Durban Super Giants in the second edition of the SA20, Pooran opened up about his goals as he aims to put in more match-winning performances to help his team lift the title at the end of the season.

Notably, Durban will host MI Cape Town in their opening game of the season. Under the leadership of Rashid Khan, Cape Town finished at the bottom of the table in 2023 but Pooran is not ready to take them lightly as he wants to stay focused on the present and added that whichever team can hold their nerves better, will eventually emerge victorious.

“I just want to continue what I’ve been doing over the last couple of years, which is being consistent in putting in match-winning performances and trying to help my teammates to be successful as well,” Pooran was quoted as saying by IOL.

“The game is played on its day, regardless of who they have on their team. We have a really good line-up as well, a lot of skilful players. It is about execution, bat versus ball, as simple as that. Whoever can hold their nerves as long as possible has a better chance of winning. We’re ready, and we’re looking forward to the challenge,” the 28-year-old said ahead of taking on MI Cape Town.

It gives us West Indian players another opportunity to get better: Pooran

West Indies failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup in 2022 and the ODI World Cup in 2023. Reflecting upon that, Pooran stated that the last couple of years have been extremely challenging for West Indies but he’s happy and thankful to leagues like SA20 for giving them the opportunity to get better.

“The last couple of years have been disappointing, and because it’s a new year, it’s a new opportunity for all of us. I’m really happy and thankful to the leagues like the SA20: it gives us West Indian players another opportunity to get better and to feed off international superstars, and get an opportunity to learn – and I think that’s key for us,” the southpaw added.
