‘Because we are not allowed anymore!’ – Wasim Akram’s on-air statement on IPL goes viral

During the first ODI between Australia and Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, legendary Pakistani bowler Wasim Akram addressed his absence from cash-rich league IPL-related activities.

The Indian Premier League (IPL), which began in 2008, initially featured Pakistani players in its inaugural season. However, following the tragic Mumbai attacks on November 26, 2008, diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan deteriorated significantly, leading to the exclusion of Pakistani players from the league.

During the commentary session of the Australia-Pakistan ODI, Akram was involved in an interesting exchange with fellow commentators, including David Warner. When the conversation turned to potential pricing for Australian talent Jake Fraser-McGurk, Akram gave an interesting response. “I have checked out of IPL, we are not allowed anymore,” he said on air.

The statement highlighted the ongoing complexities in Indo-Pak cricket relations. Notably, Akram was earlier connected with IPL, as he previously served as the bowling consultant for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2010, working with prominent Indian pacers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav.

Meanwhile, Australia secured a narrow two-wicket victory over Pakistan in the series opener. The game saw Pakistan, under new white-ball captain Mohammed Rizwan, post 203 runs on the back of contributions from Babar Azam (37) and Rizwan (44). Australia’s chase was successfully steered by captain Pat Cummins, who remained unbeaten on 32 off 31 balls.
