The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Papon has called for an urgent board of directors meeting scheduled for Wednesday at the Youth and Sports Ministry. The development has fueled speculation about potential leadership changes within the cricket governing body of Bangladesh.

With political turmoil in Bangladesh, the recent change in government has affected various sectors, including sports administration. Papon, who has been absent from the country since the fall of the Awami League government, is expected to attend the meeting virtually from abroad. The meeting, set to commence at 11:00 AM, will see directors participating both in person and virtually. BCB director and chairman of the umpires committee, Iftikhar Ahmed Mithu, confirmed the meeting’s arrangements but remained tight-lipped about the agenda.

“The meeting will be held at 11:00 AM. The directors will attend the meeting both physically and virtually. The meeting was called by the president himself,” Mithu was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.

Many rumors were also being speculated that Nazmul Hassan might announce his resignation during this meeting. If true, this could make the way for a National Sports Council (NSC) nominated director to take up the role. Former national team captain Faruque Ahmed is reportedly the frontrunner for the position.

“I’m currently in Bangkok as my daughter underwent surgery today. I have received a text about the meeting. I don’t know what would be the topics of discussion in the meeting,” he added.

On Monday, Jalal Yunus, an NSC-nominated director, resigned from his position. Another NSC-nominated director, Ahmed Sajjadul Alam Bobby, is yet to step down despite being asked to do so by the NSC. Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud had recently visited the BCB headquarters. Besides, Mahmud had previously hinted at the possibility of appointing an interim president if Papon continued to abstain from his official duties. This meeting could potentially bring clarity to this proposition.
