The Big Bash League 2023-24 is expected to offer mouth-watering action to fans and experts alike and the latest developments indicate the same as a significant trade involving star Australian leggie Adam Zampa and wicketkeeper-batter Sam Harper has surfaced.
Zampa has been traded to the Melbourne Renegades from the Melbourne Stars in exchange for Sam Harper, the Renegades’ wicketkeeper-batter.
Meanwhile, Cricket Australia (CA) has revealed the schedule for BBL 13, consisting of 44 games including 40 home-and-away matches and a revamped four-game finals series featuring the top four sides.
The tournament will kick off with last season’s runners-up, Brisbane Heat, playing against Melbourne Stars at the Gabba on December 7.

Reflecting on the trade, Zampa expressed his feelings about leaving Stars, where he had given it all with the ball in hand with 98 wickets in 81 games.
“Making a cross-town move is always going to raise some interest, it was a difficult decision. Joining the Renegades meant playing with my best friends and enjoying Melbourne summers at Marvel Stadium. The team’s growth excites me, and I look forward to adding spice to the Melbourne derby with some player movement,” said Zampa as quoted by Cricket.com.au.
Zampa’s move to the Renegades marks his fourth Big Bash club, having previously been associated with Sydney Thunder, Adelaide Strikers, and Melbourne Stars. The trade, which came as a surprise considering Zampa’s recent two-year extension with the Stars, adds a new dimension to the upcoming season.
Stars’ decision to part ways with Zampa is part of a calculated management strategy. After missing the finals for the past three seasons and finishing at the bottom of the standings in BBL 12, the club is determined to revitalize the playing squad. General manager Blair Crouch emphasized their efforts to rebuild and improve the club’s performance in the upcoming season.
On the other hand, the acquisition of Sam Harper provides Stars with a reliable local wicketkeeping option. With English recruit Joe Clarke previously handling the gloves for the past two seasons, Harper’s presence will bring stability to the team.
Crouch expressed his excitement about securing Harper’s services, stating, “We’re thrilled to be able to secure the services of Sam, who is an outstanding person, and we’re looking forward to seeing him behind the stumps in BBL 13.”
The trade involving Zampa and Harper has already created space for Stars to make further key signings. They have secured Australian and Victorian quick Scott Boland on a three-year deal, and more additions are expected as they aim to strengthen their squad.
With the BBL13 schedule announced and the trade between Zampa and Harper finalised, cricket fans can anticipate an exciting season filled with intense matches and new dynamics within the teams. The Melbourne derby, in particular, will be eagerly anticipated as Zampa’s move adds an extra layer of rivalry and anticipation to the clash between Renegades and Stars.
