Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced the appointment of Mohammad Salahuddin as the new assistant coach on a short-term deal. He will be joining head coach Phil Simmons’ coaching staff soon.

Salahuddin reunited with the Bangladesh setup on a contract until March 15, 2025, having previously had stints with the Tigers as assistant coach and fielding coach in the last decade. BCB president Faruque Ahmed is hoping the appointment will pave the way for more local coaches being promoted to important roles in the future.

“When I took over as BCB president, I made a commitment to provide opportunities for deserving candidates to contribute to the national team set-up,” Faruque was quoted by ICC as saying.

Faruque spoke highly about Salahuddin, pointing out his enormous experience and knowledge, which make him a suitable candidate for the assistant coach’s position.

“Salahuddin brings with him a wealth of experience, pedigree, and knowledge, making him the ideal candidate for this role. I firmly believe it is time to integrate more capable Bangladeshi coaches into the system,” Faruque noted.

Salahuddin, who is a graduate of Jahangirnagar University, has also served as the assistant coach of the Singapore national cricket team in the past.

What’s next for Bangladesh?

Speaking of the upcoming schedule, Bangladesh are set to play three ODIs against Afghanistan in Sharjah on November 6, 9, and 11, respectively. This will be followed by a multi-format tour of the Caribbean isl, where the Asian nation will compete against the West Indies in two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is.

Salahuddin will form a partnership with Simmons as Bangladesh look to recover after losing eight international games on the trot across formats. The Test series against the West Indies will form a part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, although both Bangladesh and the West Indies are not in contention for reaching next year’s final.
