England suffered a 43-run defeat against Australia in the second Ashes Test despite an outstanding innings of 155 by English captain Ben Stokes. One intriguing moment occurred when Jonny Bairstow was stumped by Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey in an unexpected turn of events.
In the 52nd over of the game, Bairstow strolled out of his crease assuming the ball was dead, however, Carey had a shy at the stumps and the batter was declared out by the third umpire. Notably, Bairstow had no intention to take a run as he ducked the final ball of Cameron Green’s over and moved towards Stokes at the non-striker’s end.
The incident sparked a debate, which has also been joined by the English Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Sunak, an avid cricket fan, feels that Australia violated the spirit of cricket with the controversial dismissal of Bairstow. The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson confirmed that Sunak supported the sentiments expressed by England captain Stokes regarding the incident.
“The Prime Minister agrees with Ben Stokes. He stated that he would never want to win a game in the manner that Australia did”, the spokesperson was quoted by Irish News.
He further acknowledged the thrilling performance of Stokes in the match, highlighting that it showcased his exceptional skills. Despite the loss, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in the English team’s ability to bounce back at Headingley. When asked whether he believes that Australia’s actions were contrary to the spirit of cricket, his spokesperson responded with a definitive “Yes.”
Sunak also expressed his views on the Lord’s Long Room altercation involving few elderly MCC members and Australian openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja, both of whom were “verbally abused” as per Cricket Australia’s complaint. Notably, as many as three MCC members have been suspended in the aftermath of the event.
“He [Sunak] thinks it was right that the MCC has taken swift action to suspend any member accused of poor behaviour,” the spokesperson confirmed.
Meanwhile, Australia’s triumph ensured a dominant 2-0 advantage in the Ashes 2023 series, comprising of five matches. The third Test of the series will be played at Headingley in Leeds from July 6.
