Pat Cummins and co. have punched Team India hard in the past few grand tournaments. However, whenever a spirited Indian side have toured down under in the last few years, they have managed to stun the defending WTC (World Test Championship) champions.

Fascinatingly, while Cummins achieved a significant World Cup in 2023 against the Men in Blue in their backyard, the script was finally tossed as the premier India pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, took the reigns of the team into his hands as Rohit Sharma missed the Perth Test due to personal reasons. As intriguing as it may sound, both the pacers leading the side with the visitors coming into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25) after suffering a drubbing against New Zealand at home, the result of the first Test surely silenced the Australian crowd.

Bumrah scripted history under his leadership on Monday, November 25, on Day 4, after Australia faced their one of the worst at-home obliterations against a visiting Asian side. Notably, after winning the toss, the fiery Indian pacer took a bold call to bat first despite having a grassy pitch up on the offer. The decision seemingly backfired after India collapsed to a meagre 150 runs on the board in the first innings. However, Bumrah led with the ball from the front and claimed a sensational five-wicket haul to fold Australia for just 107 runs.

In the second innings, the pitch played possums and aided first the openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, who batted magnificently to finish Day 2 with 172 runs on the board without losing a wicket. On the third day, even though India lost a couple of wickets, Jaiswal’s memorable daddy century (161) and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten hundred (100*) put the Indian team in the driver’s seat. As a result, Australia were handed a gigantic target of 534 runs.

In reply, only Travis Head showed some resistance and fight with his gritty 89-run knock until Jasprit Bumrah outfoxed him to get him caught behind the wickets by Rishabh Pant. Earlier, in the last session of Day 3, India made inroads by scalping three wickets of the Australian top order in quick succession. Since then, barring Head, the rest of the batting unit failed to recover from the early jolts under a massive run chase pressure.

In the second innings as well, Bumrah claimed a three-wicket haul while Mohammed Siraj also complimented him well by claiming three wickets from the other end. In the end, it was only a matter of time as Australia got wrapped up on 238 runs to get beaten by an emphatic 295 runs. This meant that Team India became the first team to claim a victory at the Optus Stadium in Perth. As things move ahead, both teams will now clash in Adelaide as the Indian team lead the series by a 1-0 margin.
