‘At the time I definitely thought I caught it’ – Cameron Green breaks silence on controversial catch during WTC final

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green believes he held onto the catch that ended Shubman Gill’s innings on Day 4 of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final on Saturday, June 10. Gill was declared out by the Third umpire, Richard Kettleborough, following the tea break during the eighth over of India’s second innings after Team India had made a solid start in their 444-run chase to win.

Scott Boland, the lanky Australia pacer, found the edge of Gill’s bat, and Green dived to his left to complete the catch. However, the debate has opened up about whether the Aussie all-rounder was successful in getting his hands under the ball just in time or not.

Green stated that he was certain that he had caught the ball. He also said that in the heat of the moment, he believed it was clean and threw it up, showing no evidence of doubt. He added that as the India skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were left unconvinced; the decision was left to the third umpire, and he agreed.

“At the time I definitely thought I caught it. I think in the heat of the moment, I thought it was clean and threw it up and obviously showed no sign of any doubt. And then it’s left up to the third umpire (Kettleborough) and he agreed,” Green said in a post-match press conference.

I back myself that I can take a few nice catches: Green

The 24-year-old went on to say that he had spent a lot of time and effort on catching since he was a child. He also stated that as a boy, he would constantly aim to get into first or second slip and that he has done so throughout his entire career. Besides, he backs himself and that he can take a few nice catches.

“Ever since I’ve grown up I have put a lot of time and effort into it (catching). I think growing up I would always try to get myself in first or second slip and I have done that basically my whole junior career,” he continued.

“I back myself that I can take a few nice catches and I was a bit disappointed the first day dropping that (easy) one, but it’s always nice to repay,” Green concluded.
