The Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China has seen some exhilarating action as athletes from the participating nations have shown their prowess across the different sports.

The Indian women’s cricket team created history as they won the gold medal after defeating Sri Lanka in the championship match on Monday, September 25. The men’s cricket event commences Wednesday, September 27, as Nepal take on Mongolia at the Zhejiang Cricket Field. Like the women’s cricket event, the men’s cricket event will also be played in the T20 format.

India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh have received direct entry into the quarterfinals, by virtue of their positions in the ICC T20I Team Rankings. The quarterfinals will begin on Tuesday, October 3, with India locking horns with one of the qualifying teams. The gold medal match is scheduled to be held on October 7. Afghanistan will play a quarterfinal qualifier against Mongolia. The remaining nine teams have been divided into three groups of three each.

The top five teams in the tournament, as per ICC rankings, are also taking part in the ODI World Cup, which begins on October 5. The first-team players of these five cricketing nations will not be taking part in the Asian Games as they will be competing in the World Cup. Second-string teams have been chosen to play in the Asian Games in Hangzhou. However, there are a lot of players who have had international exposure and can light up the stage in the multi-nation event.

Cricket enthusiasts will be waiting to see how the lesser-known teams in the sport fare during the competition. It is a dream for many cricket fans to see the game expanding to newer horizons and the Asian Games will certainly serve as a great platform for the same.
