Ashes 2023: Rehan Ahmed added to England squad as cover for injured Moeen Ali

18-year-old leg spinner Rehan Ahmed has been added to England’s Ashes squad ahead of the second Test at Lord’s. The Leicestershire spinner, who made his international debut last year, has been drafted into the squad as a cover for the injured Moeen Ali.

England’s chances of reclaiming the Ashes took a massive hit during the first Test at Edgbaston when veteran all-rounder Moeen Ali sustained blisters on his spinning finger. The off-spinner struggled to control the ball due to his injury, handicapping England’s bowling unit on a spinning track at Edgbaston.

Even though England coach Brendon McCullum was positive about Moeen Ali’s recovery ahead of the second Test, they have added prodigious leggie Rehan Ahmed to the squad. The 18-year-old bowling all-rounder made his Test debut for England against Pakistan last year, returning with a memorable five-for on debut.

Rehan Ahmed likely to replace Moeen Ali in the second Test

It is worth noting that Moeen’s injury was a big concern for the home side as they had no other spin-blowing options in their squad. Former England skipper Joe Root would’ve been the sole spinner for the side had Moeen not recovered in time for the second Test.

However, Rehan Ahmed’s inclusion adds another dimension to the English attack as the young leggie displayed tremendous potential on his Test debut last year. Although the 18-year-old has not been able to live up to his reputation for Leicestershire in this year’s County Championship, he can work wonders under the guidance of Ben Stokes in the England setup.
